Changing to winter tyres in Kazakhstan now costs anywhere from 5,000 to 20,000 tenge for four wheels, depending on the city and wheel size, Kazinform reports.

The most expensive city surveyed was Uralsk in western Kazakhstan, at 14,000 tenge for R16 wheels and 20,000 for R18. The cheapest was Aktau on the Caspian coast, at 5,000 and 8,000 tenge. In the capital Astana, the same job costs 10,000 and 14,000 tenge.

With winter approaching across the steppe, the price gap is a useful reminder to book early: the first snow always brings the queues.
