Long before modern health rules, Kazakh nomads already knew how to run a quarantine.
The sick were isolated, contacts between villages were limited, and travellers were warned away from dangerous areas, historian Azamat Bekbolatuly told Kazinform. Communities marked off risky territory and changed their precautions as epidemics came and went.
It is a reminder that public health on the steppe did not begin with hospitals and ministries. It began with distance, discipline and neighbours warning each other.
