ANALYSIS: Turkiye's under-15 ban is a test of whether platforms can be forced to know their users' ages
Turkiye has done what many governments have talked about and few have actually enforced: from November 1, no new social media accounts for children under 15, age checks through the state's e-Devlet gateway, and a March 31, 2027 deadline for existing accounts to verify.
The design is deliberately hard to dodge. Age is confirmed by a token from e-Devlet, not by a birthday typed into a signup form. Teenagers aged 15 to 17 get limited services, not a free run. Platforms that refuse face fines, advertising bans and bandwidth throttling, the sanctions set out in the regulation.
What makes this more than a domestic story is the timing. Governments across the world are moving in the same direction on child safety online, but most have stopped at fines or voluntary codes. Turkiye's version puts the state itself in the verification loop, which raises two questions at once: will it protect children better than self-declared ages ever did, and what does it mean for privacy when a government gateway stands between a teenager and an account?
The next five months are the real test. Platforms must build the checks, millions of existing accounts must verify, and scammers are already exploiting the confusion with fake verification messages. If verification stalls or the sanctions stay unused, the ban will look like a headline, not a policy.
What to watch: how the major platforms implement e-Devlet checks in practice, whether the March 31, 2027 deadline is extended, whether bandwidth or advertising sanctions are actually used against a non-compliant platform, and whether other countries cite Turkiye's model in their own age-verification debates.
