Kazakhstan's farmers are upgrading their inputs: elite seeds now make up 12 percent of sowing, above the 11.6 percent target, and farms applied 2.2 million tonnes of mineral fertiliser, about two thirds of what agronomists say the land needs.
The government also plans to lift renewal of the tractor and machinery fleet to 8 percent by the end of the year, and to keep expanding water-saving irrigation.
For a country that sells itself as a breadbasket, the numbers show an agriculture sector trying to move from volume to efficiency.
