The protest wave reached Switzerland on Halloween night, as unauthorised demonstrations in Zurich and Basel turned violent.
In Zurich, hundreds of people gathered on Langstrasse, some in Halloween masks, before barricades of bins, bicycles and scooters were set on fire. Police used water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets, and a car was torched and shop windows smashed before calm returned around 1:30 a.m.
In Basel, about 150 people marched to the St. Johann district, where barricades of bins and metal barriers were set alight.
The slogan, borrowed from France, was 'We've had enough, in Switzerland too': a sign that a French student protest is becoming a European mood.
