Two oil tankers exploded after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran's Revolutionary Guard navy, in the latest attack on Gulf shipping.
The Guard said the tankers were travelling an unauthorized route and had switched off their navigation systems. It gave no names, no crew details and no damage assessment, and the claim could not be independently verified.
Britain's maritime security agency, UKMTO, separately reported Sunday that a merchant vessel in the strait sent a mayday call saying another vessel had been struck by an unknown projectile.
The strait between Iran and Oman is one of the world's most important oil chokepoints, so even unverified attacks there move energy markets and insurance rates. The pattern of the last three days, mines, limpet devices and projectiles aimed at tankers, points to a deliberate campaign to pressure shipping, not isolated accidents.
