US President Donald Trump says Washington is ready to strike Iran, but has not yet taken a final decision, explaining the hold as a wish to avoid new casualties.
Trump said a significant part of Iran's infrastructure has already been destroyed, but warned the United States could use more powerful force if Tehran does not change its position.
The warning lands days after a weekend of attacks on shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz, and after Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, vowed Tehran would hit US bases and other American targets if Iran is attacked. Both sides are now talking in public about what the next strike would look like, which is itself a form of pressure.
