Uzbekistan rewrites its labour migration playbook, and Europe is the target
Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has ordered a full overhaul of how the country sends workers abroad. The message from Monday's meeting in Tashkent: Uzbekistan has the workers, but it is losing placements to weak language training and disorganised recruitment.
Germany alone sent orders for 45,000 specialists from Uzbekistan this year, yet only about 2,000 were placed, largely because too few candidates speak German. The European Union has for the first time written Central Asian specialists into its migration strategy.
The fix: one migration centre per region next year, 8 billion soums each, and 10,000 people trained in a profession plus German for Germany. A forum in Tashkent from November 30 to December 5 will connect Uzbeks with employers from Europe and the Gulf. Work abroad will count toward pensions, and returnees, over 1.1 million this year, are to be found decent work at home.
