Kazakhstan's security service detains 10 people in Atyrau, Kazakhstan, over alleged extremist group

Kazakhstan's National Security Committee (KNB) detained 10 people in Atyrau, in the country's west, on suspicion of creating and leading an extremist group, taking part in it, promoting terrorism and inciting religious hatred. The detentions took place last Friday, Tengrinews reports.

According to investigators, the group aimed to forcibly change the constitutional order in the western region. Searches seized weapons, drugs and religious literature, and video released by the KNB shows officers pulling suspects from homes, cars and a taxi, with one detainee later loaded onto a plane.

The case is a reminder that Kazakhstan's security services are watching the Caspian west closely. Atyrau, the country's oil capital, sits near sensitive energy infrastructure, and the authorities have moved fast to frame the arrests as prevention rather than reaction.
