Kazakhstan's prime minister names military exercise failings after Caspian Sea tragedies
Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has set out the failings found in the armed forces after the tragedies during exercises on the Caspian Sea, in an answer to a parliamentary inquiry reported by Kazinform. A comprehensive inspection of the Defence Ministry found weak control over exercises, poor risk assessment and slow readiness to react when conditions changed.
Bektenov said the army is already using drones for monitoring, and some units are testing personal trackers for location and physical condition. On the president's instructions, a new document is being prepared to overhaul military command and standardise safety requirements for manoeuvres.
The statement matters because it is unusually specific. Rather than blaming individuals alone, the government is pointing at the system that plans and supervises exercises, and promising new rules for how they are run.
