Kazakhstan finds road sector violations worth 8 billion tenge, opens 33 investigations

Kazakhstan's road sector has violations worth more than 8 billion tenge, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov heard at a government meeting on road construction quality, Kazinform reports. First Deputy Prosecutor General Zhandos Umiraliyev said 33 pre-trial investigations have been opened, while cancelling dubious tenders prevented 36 billion tenge in spending.

The meeting focused on new technology and tighter materials control, including Superpave methods and polymer-modified bitumen, plus automatic recording of violations and tougher liability for overloading.

Bektenov ordered a comprehensive package of proposals by the end of November to fix systemic problems at every stage of road works. For drivers, the promise is roads that last longer. For contractors, the warning is that the old tender games are now being counted in billions.
