Nearly 11,000 candidates register for Kazakhstan's local council elections
Kazakhstan's Central Election Commission has registered 10,971 candidates for elections to local councils, known as maslikhats, Kazinform reports. As of November 1, an average of three candidates are competing for each single-mandate seat, and 1,219 candidates are registered on party lists across 20 regions.
Quota categories account for 43.2 percent of candidates. In the two biggest cities, Astana and Almaty, 83 single-mandate candidates each are registered, and 39 in Shymkent.
Maslikhat elections rarely make headlines, but they decide who controls local budgets, land and services across Kazakhstan's regions. A field this crowded suggests real competition for those seats, not a quiet coronation.
