Kazakhstan releases a second tiger into the wild, male Amur joins Umit
Kazakhstan has released a second tiger into the wild, Kazinform reports. The male Amur tiger joins the tigress Umit, who was released on July 31 as the first tiger to roam Kazakhstan's wild in more than 70 years, after the extinction of the Turan tiger.
Before release, Amur passed veterinary checks. The programme, built around the Ile-Balkhash reserve, aims to restore a wild tiger population to the Ili River delta and southern Lake Balkhash, the historic habitat of the extinct Caspian tiger. Two cubs are planned for release in May 2027.
A second tiger in the wild is a milestone, not a finished job. The real test is whether Umit and Amur establish territories, survive and breed, turning two released animals into a population.
