On the evening of November 1, the lower part of the city was wrapped in dense smog, with widely shared air-quality screenshots showing readings in the hundreds across the lower districts, one marked "dangerous for life".
Almaty sits in a bowl between mountains, and every heating season the same trap closes: cold air, coal and car exhaust, and nowhere for it to go. Winter has barely started.
