Kazakhstan's snap local elections on November 29 will cost 35.8 billion tenge, election officials say.
About 70 percent of that goes just to paying election commission staff, according to Central Election Commission member Mikhail Bortnik. The ballot order was also drawn: Auyl first, then the National Social Democratic Party, the People's Party of Kazakhstan, Respublica, Aq Jol, Baitaq and Adilet.
Local councils, the maslikhats, decide much of daily life in Kazakhstan's regions, from budgets to utilities. This vote fills them in one go, and the state is paying heavily to run it.
