Finance Brief: Binance just passed its hardest test, and 3.64 billion dollars walked out
The world's largest crypto exchange reopened withdrawals after a major hack, and customers moved a large share of money out within hours. That matters because it shows whether trust in the platform survived the attack, and trust is what keeps an exchange alive.
The numbers, from Binance's own recovery update, verified against CoinDesk and other outlets: after the October 29 hack of about 6.3 billion dollars, withdrawals were restored on November 1 across 15 networks. In the first nine and a half hours, Binance processed 4.649 billion dollars in withdrawals against 1.01 billion dollars in deposits, a net outflow of about 3.64 billion dollars. That is 2.1 percent of the 171 billion dollars in assets Binance reported before the incident. Binance says withdrawal demand spiked, then stabilized, and that about 95 percent of the affected assets have been replenished from reserves and insurance funds. Those figures are company-reported, and a fresh proof-of-reserves report is expected.
The read: a 2.1 percent net outflow after a record hack is a stress test passed, not a bank run. Customers took money out, but most stayed, and deposits kept flowing. The risk is not the first nine hours, it is the next phase, as withdrawals open for hundreds more tokens still under security review.
Closer to home, Kazakhstan's credit picture is splitting. New retail lending fell 8.8 percent in September to 1.6 trillion tenge, while new small business lending rose 41.7 percent. Households are pulling back, firms are borrowing to expand, and that split is worth watching into year end.
What to watch: the proof-of-reserves update, the pace of withdrawals as more networks reopen, and whether rival exchanges keep absorbing the outflows. If outflows stay contained, Binance keeps its crown. If they restart, the hack becomes a confidence story, not a security story.
