Uzbekistan now gets its news from Telegram first, television second.
A national media study of 1,411 adults across all 14 regions of Uzbekistan found Telegram channels are the top news source for 51.6 percent of respondents, ahead of television at 44.6 percent and social media at 41.6 percent. Telegram is used by 86.1 percent of those surveyed.
Trust runs the other way: television is still the most trusted source at 44.3 percent, against 11.3 percent for Telegram channels and 7.4 percent for news sites. Fake news is the audience's top complaint at 46.6 percent, and people say they lack information on prices, jobs and social support.
