Iran's supreme leader has authorised the government to pursue dialogue with the United States, according to Iran's president.
President Masoud Pezeshkian's office said Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei granted the government the authority needed to resolve differences with Washington through talks. The announcement came as Iranian and Qatari officials held a third straight day of talks aimed at ending the confrontation with the United States.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin also spoke by phone with Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezayi about the Middle East situation, the Kremlin said.
For a country that has lived under the threat of renewed strikes, a formal green light for talks is the clearest sign yet that Tehran wants a negotiated way out.
