An oil tanker caught fire east of the Strait of Hormuz after hitting a naval mine, according to Iran's navy.
The tanker burst into flames after striking the mine, the navy said, in waters that carry a large share of the world's oil. The incident came as talks on easing the United States-Iran confrontation continued, and oil prices fell sharply on hopes of diplomacy.
The strait is the narrow chokepoint between Iran and Oman, and any mine incident there raises the stakes for shipping even when talks are moving.
