Uzbekistan's National Guard has responded after a video appeal by a child begging at Tashkent's Eski Juva market spread online, saying claims the child was beaten and had an arm broken will be investigated.

The Guard's Tashkent department said vendors at the neighbouring Chorsu market had asked a local inspector to act over the child begging. The inspector approached the child to establish the facts and speak to the parents, and asked them to come to the market's support point.

The child's mother and several women nearby resisted, the statement said, and the inspector called National Guard troops who were patrolling the area. Everyone involved was taken to the support point for the circumstances to be established.

The Guard said the claims of physical force and a broken arm made in the video appeal will be checked and given an objective legal assessment.
