ANALYSIS: The Hormuz incidents, and the fog between war and talks

Monday night brought two things at once to the Strait of Hormuz: explosions reported on Iran's Qeshm Island and off Bandar Lengeh, and a pile of competing claims about what caused them. Iran's state media reported the blasts and said the cause was unclear. An Israeli broadcaster claimed an American strike hit an air defence system on Qeshm. Washington has said nothing to confirm that, and Tehran has not confirmed a cause either.

That fog is the story. The strait carries a large share of the world's seaborne oil, so any incident there moves prices and nerves even before facts arrive. Both sides have spent the week signalling through the press: Tehran claiming drone shootdowns, Washington warning of strikes, Gulf allies quietly preparing. In that environment, an unexplained blast is instantly drafted into whichever narrative the reader already believes.

What actually changed is narrower, and worth holding onto. First, the incidents are real as reports: multiple Iranian outlets carried them, and residents reported aircraft over Qeshm. Second, nothing about their cause is verified. Third, the diplomatic track has not stopped: talks continue through mediators, and a separate Ukraine-Russia meeting is now dated for Abu Dhabi. War preparation and negotiation are running in parallel, not in sequence.

For the Turkic world, the stakes are concrete. Türkiye imports nearly all its oil, so a Hormuz shock feeds straight into fuel prices and inflation. Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan export through routes that depend on calm Gulf shipping. A strait incident that stays unexplained is a tax on all of them, paid in risk premiums.

What to watch: any official statement on the cause of the Qeshm and Bandar Lengeh blasts, and whether it matches the strike claim or the controlled-disposal explanation; whether the mediator talks produce a proposal with dates attached; and whether oil prices move on the next headline, because the market is now pricing rumour as readily as fact.
