BREAKING: The US struck Iran's Qeshm Island on Monday, US media report, citing American officials. The Wall Street Journal first reported the strikes, and CNN cited three US officials calling them limited and defensive.
Iranian state media reported five explosions in rapid succession on Qeshm, in the Strait of Hormuz, and further blasts at Bandar Lengeh. US officials said the targets were Iranians using surface-to-air missiles against US assets, after Iran fired at a US aircraft.
Washington kept the strikes quiet, officials said, to avoid signaling a return to full-scale war, even as President Donald Trump said a deal with Tehran could still happen. The same day, Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed it downed three US drones near the strait, but Washington dismissed at least part of that claim as false and the drone claims remain unconfirmed.
Qeshm sits at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about a fifth of the world's crude oil and gas. That is why a limited strike still moved oil prices overn
