ANALYSIS: The secret strikes on Qeshm, and what quiet war means
The explosions on Qeshm Island were first reported as a mystery. Within hours they became something more revealing: the Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, reported that the United States had carried out the strikes itself, as part of a series of limited attacks in recent weeks that Washington deliberately kept secret.
That secrecy is the story. The US and Iran have been at war since late February, yet both sides keep finding reasons not to say so out loud. Washington calls the Qeshm strikes defensive, aimed at Iranians firing surface-to-air missiles at US assets and at protecting commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran, meanwhile, answers with its own claims, three US drones downed near the strait, which Washington partly dismisses as false. Each side is fighting and denying in the same breath.
The timing sharpens the picture. The strikes landed on the eve of US midterm elections, while President Donald Trump publicly said a deal with Tehran could still happen and his vice president spoke of progress toward an off-ramp. A president signaling peace while his military quietly strikes is not a contradiction to resolve, it is the strategy: keep pressure on without owning an escalation voters might punish.
For the Turkic world, the stakes run through energy and trade. The Strait of Hormuz carries about a fifth of global crude oil and gas, and Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan all live with the price swings and shipping risks that follow each incident. Monday showed the whipsaw in one day: oil fell more than 7 percent on talk of progress, then rose again overnight on news of the strikes.
What to watch: whether the strikes stay limited and secret, or whether a US or Iranian miscalculation forces both sides to admit the scale of what is happening. Watch Hormuz shipping and insurance costs, the midterm results, and whether the quiet-strike pattern continues after the election. If talks produce a framework, the war premium in oil prices should unwind fast. If they do not, Qeshm will not be the last island in the news.
