BREAKING: Iran says it shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone near the Strait of Hormuz, a claim the US has not confirmed.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said their air defences destroyed the MQ-9 east of the strait, calling it the 55th of its type they have brought down. In a separate claim, the IRGC said electronic warfare brought down two smaller US MQM-170 reconnaissance drones south of Qeshm Island and that the aircraft were captured, taking its claimed total of captured MQM-170s to four.
Treat this as an Iranian claim, not an established fact: the US military has not confirmed any drone loss, and it has disputed similar Iranian claims before. The claim comes a day after the US carried out limited strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island, and a week before US, Ukrainian and Russian negotiators are due to meet in Abu Dhabi.
