US President Donald Trump played down the Iran confrontation on election eve, saying: 'When was the last time we fired a shot? This is not a war. This is a very soft war.'
Trump spoke on Fox News as Americans headed to vote on Tuesday in elections that will decide control of Congress. His words came hours after US strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island, which Washington described as limited and defensive, and after Iran claimed to have downed US drones.
The framing matters: Trump is telling voters the Hormuz confrontation is contained, even as strikes, drone claims and a November 10-11 Abu Dhabi negotiating round all point the other way.
