Karl Bushby, 57, set out in 1998 with two rules: use no transport, and get home under his own power. He was welcomed home in Hull on November 2. Along the way he was held captive by an armed group in jungle in 2001 and even crossed a sea by swimming, according to the account carried by Uzbek media. It is one of the longest unbroken walks ever recorded, and Uzbekistan was one stop on a route that crossed continents.
