DID YOU KNOW: Turkmenistan is home to a horse that looks like it was cast from gold?
The Akhal-Teke, bred for over 3,000 years by the Teke tribe around the Akhal oasis, is one of the oldest horse breeds on Earth. Its coat shimmers with a metallic glow because its hair bends light like a prism, earning it the nickname the Golden Horse.
Bred to cross the harsh Karakum desert, it is famed for endurance and loyalty, so prized that Turkmenistan made it a national symbol and UNESCO listed its breeding tradition in 2023. Fewer than 7,000 remain worldwide, which makes every golden foal a living piece of Turkic heritage.
