UPDATE: The United States struck Iran's Qeshm Island after an attack on an American aircraft, Axios correspondent Barak Ravid reports, giving the first stated trigger for Monday night's strikes.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the strikes, which Washington has described as limited and defensive. Iran's Revolutionary Guards say their air defences also downed two American MQM-170 drones south of Qeshm using electronic warfare, and claim a US MQ-9 Reaper was destroyed east of the Strait of Hormuz.
Those drone claims are unconfirmed by Washington, and Tehran's claim of 55 MQ-9s downed in total should be read as its own tally, not a verified count. The strikes and the claims together show both sides now fighting over the narrative as well as the waterway.
