Uzbekistan's higher education ministry is investigating reports that students are being barred from classes unless they install the 'Xavfsiz talaba' (Safe Student) app.
Students at the Uzbek State University of World Languages and other universities say they are asked to install the app at entrances and during classes, and get reprimands if they refuse. A working group has begun checking the claims.
The ministry stressed that classes must continue and students' right to education must be protected. The case tests where a safety app ends and a condition for studying begins.
