A murder in Kyrgyzstan's Batken region has sparked a debate about the advice women get when they report abuse.

Dilfuza Sainazarova, 24, was killed by her husband days after visiting her parents in tears, saying she no longer wanted to live with him and complaining of beatings and her mother-in-law's treatment. A video shows her mother advising her to go home, wash up, pretend nothing happened, obey her husband and serve his parents.

The video has reopened a painful argument in Kyrgyzstan about family pressure on women to endure violence. Separately, Kyrgyz MPs have proposed stronger measures against domestic and sexual violence.
