NEW: The trial of Azerbaijan opposition leader Ali Karimli opened in Baku today.
Karimli, who chairs the Popular Front Party, and his deputy Mamed Ibrahim appeared before the Baku Court for Grave Crimes, presided over by judge Vugar Guliev, where a preparatory hearing set the case for full trial. The next hearing is on November 13.
Prosecutors charge both men under article 278.1 of the Criminal Code, covering acts aimed at the violent seizure of power or the violent change of the constitutional order, according to Report. The case is being investigated by the State Security Service.
Karimli is Azerbaijan's best-known opposition figure, and the trial opens days before the country's November 8 Victory Day commemorations.
