Kazakhstan has a new transport chief. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev removed Nurlan Sauranbayev as transport minister and appointed Assel Zhanasova as Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Kazakhstan's presidential press office said.
Zhanasova moves from deputy head of the Presidential Administration, a post she held since December 2025. Sauranbayev had led the ministry since June 2025.
Why it matters: transport sits at the center of Kazakhstan's Middle Corridor ambitions, the overland trade route between China and Europe, so the person running the ministry is also, in practice, running one of the country's biggest economic bets.
