Kazakhstan's police have taken more than 2,000 weapons out of illegal circulation since the start of 2026, the Interior Ministry said, including 184 criminal weapons and 160 looted during the January 2022 unrest.

Raids on October 20-23 alone turned up more than 170 firearms and over 800 rounds of ammunition, and four more January 2022 loot weapons were found in Almaty, Shymkent and the Zhetysu region.

The ministry reminded citizens they can hand in illegal weapons voluntarily and avoid liability for possessing them.

Why it matters: nearly five years on, the January 2022 armoury is still surfacing, and each recovery closes one more file from the country's most traumatic week.
