A sculptor in Kyrgyzstan's Talas region says he was never paid 5.5 million som for a statue of Kokum-biy he made for a relative of former security chief Kamchybek Tashiev, who allegedly planned to gift it to Tashiev.
The customer told him, in the words reported to President Sadyr Japarov, to make the statue because Tashiev will soon become president and he would give it to him. Japarov has ordered officials to help the sculptor.
Why it matters: the story travelled from a workshop debt to the president's desk because it touches the country's most sensitive nerve, who is close to power and who pays for it.
