BREAKING: The US struck Iran's Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, US officials confirmed, after Iranian forces fired at an American aircraft and claimed to have downed a US drone.
Iran's state news agency reported five explosions in quick succession on the island, and blasts in the nearby port city of Bandar Lengeh. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they shot down three US drones near the strait, claims Washington has not confirmed.
The strike was described by US officials as limited and defensive, not a return to major combat, and part of a series of small strikes Washington has kept quiet in recent weeks. The message is blunt: the US will hit back at threats to shipping in the world's most important oil chokepoint, while still talking about a deal.
Iranian state television aired emergency instructions for the public in case of a nuclear strike. Qeshm sits at the mouth of the strait through which a large share of the world's seaborne oil passes.
