JUST IN: The US has approved a draft memorandum with Iran put forward by Qatari mediators, sources told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, in what could be the first step toward an interim deal.
Under the reported outline, Tehran would announce a concession on its nuclear programme and Washington would simultaneously announce the release of part of Iran's frozen assets. Saudi Arabia and the UAE were briefed and also approved the draft, the sources said.
But Iran's top security official, Mohsen Rezaei, said Washington's response to Tehran's seven conditions was 'not convincing' and that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen only once the US meets them in full. A senior Iranian official separately told Reuters the two sides remain far from a deal.
So read this as a draft both sides are shaping, not a done deal. The strike on Qeshm and the draft landing on the same day is the pattern of this crisis: pressure and negotiation, running at the same time.
