NEW: Türkiye and South Korea agreed in Seoul to expand cooperation in nuclear energy and defence, including on one of Türkiye's biggest power projects.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said they would work together on infrastructure, biotechnology and critical minerals, and pursue joint defence exports to third countries. Their existing successes, the Firtina howitzer and the Altay tank, were held up as the model.
On trade, Erdogan said the two sides discussed lifting bilateral trade from 11 billion dollars to their agreed target of 15 billion dollars, and updating their free trade agreement.
The nuclear prize is real: Türkiye plans four reactors at Sinop on the Black Sea and four more in Thrace, and South Korea is competing for the business. A 2025 memorandum between Türkiye's TUNAS and Korea Electric Power Corp already laid the groundwork.
For Türkiye, this is a second nuclear partner track alongside Russia's Akkuyu plant, and a defence partnership with one of Asia's most advanced arms makers.
