Prosecutors in Kazakhstan's Akmola region have uncovered the theft of 78 million tenge meant for road repairs in the village of Nikolskoye.

A 167.8 million tenge contract was signed in 2023 to repair 5.4 kilometres of road. By the time it expired in December 2024, 103 million tenge had been spent, but work worth 78 million tenge was never actually done, and the money went elsewhere, prosecutors found.

Kazakhstan's roads are a perennial complaint, and cases like this explain why.
