NATO is rewriting its defence playbook, and the new version reaches deep inside Russia.
The Wall Street Journal reports that NATO's top officers met in June for the alliance's first ever Deep Strike Symposium, hosted by its supreme commander, General Alexus Grynkewich. The shift: instead of only blocking an invading force at the border, NATO would hit the bases, depots and factories behind it, on Russian soil, to break the force that sustains the attack.
Grynkewich has spelled out the idea publicly as his 'theory of victory': block the first wave, blunt the follow-on forces, then break the warfighting system itself. Nuclear weapons are not part of the strategy, the paper says.
For Moscow, the message is deterrence by reach. For the alliance's eastern members, it is a promise that a future attack would not be fought only on their territory.
