Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Bagai told state television that messages are still passing through intermediaries, but Washington's earlier positions give Tehran no reason for optimism about US sincerity in diplomacy.
The statement lands days before talks in Abu Dhabi and hours after reports that the US military has strike options ready for after the midterms. Tehran is signalling it will not be rushed into a deal while a strike threat hangs over the table.
