Vladimir Uglev, one of the developers of the Novichok nerve agent, has died.
Uglev became widely known in 2018 when, as a biochemist, he gave interviews after Sergei and Yulia Skripal were poisoned in Salisbury, England. In 2020 the same class of agent was used against Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.
His death closes one of the few public windows into the Soviet-era programme that produced the poison at the centre of two of the decade's most notorious cases.
