BREAKING: Democrats take both chambers of the US Congress in the midterm elections, US media project.
Democrats won control of the House and the Senate, flipping both chambers from the Republicans. President Donald Trump said he is willing to accept the results, while claiming Republicans would have won in a landslide had he been on the ballot.
The night produced several firsts. Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor in US history, winning Georgia. Gina Hinojosa won Texas, ending more than 30 years of Republican control of the governor's office there. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
Democrats also took Senate seats in Republican strongholds South Carolina, Texas and Kansas, for the first time in decades.
Why it matters: Washington now enters two years of divided government. Every major move from the White House, on war, trade and sanctions, will have to pass through a Congress run by the opposition.
