A series of earthquakes shook the Kyrgyzstan border region overnight, with tremors felt across Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley.
One quake of magnitude 5.2, at a depth of 10 km with its epicentre in Kyrgyzstan, was felt at 2 to 3 points in Uzbekistan's Andijan and Fergana regions, and 2 points in Namangan, about 134 to 185 km from the epicentre. Kyrgyzstan's own seismologists also recorded three overnight quakes on the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border, the strongest at 5.5.
No damage or casualty reports had been published at the time of writing.
Why it matters: the Fergana Valley is one of Central Asia's most densely populated regions, straddling three countries. Even moderate quakes there are felt by millions, and cross-border monitoring is what turns a shake into an early warning rather than a surprise.
