Almaty, Kazakhstan has approved testing of driverless cars on its city streets.
The city administration has named a test zone in the Almaly district plus 122 stretches of road, including Abay, Al-Farabi, Dostyk, Nazarbayev and Rayymbek avenues. The rules cover cars with partial and highly automated driving, under a decision signed on September 28.
Why it matters: Central Asia's biggest city is moving from talking about smart transport to actually letting the cars loose, in real traffic. If the trials work, Almaty becomes the region's test bed for a technology every carmaker and delivery company is watching.
