A woman who posed as a prosecutor's colonel in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan has been detained after allegedly taking 21,000 dollars from a man with a string of grand promises.
Police say the suspect, born in 1988 and previously convicted several times, wore a prosecutor's uniform with colonel's shoulder boards despite having no connection to the agency. She allegedly promised to help open a hotel business, get the victim's daughter into Cambridge University, buy a flat and a cheap holiday to Turkiye, and fix matters through the Prosecutor General's Office.
She is now in pre-trial detention.
Why it matters: the uniform did the conning. In a region where a title and a shoulder board still open doors, this case is a reminder that the grander the promise, and the more official the costume, the harder you should check.
