A trial in Almaty, Kazakhstan has heard new testimony about multimillion-tenge contracts in the case of Sanzhar Bokaev, ZHEST reports.

Former KazTransGas deputy director Dair Kusherov said Bokaev personally proposed the contractors for an international car rally, and funding was approved without detailed checks of the estimates.

We Can director Zhuldyz Artykbaeva said her firm itself carried out works worth 38 million tenge, but she did not know of a second contract worth over 40 million tenge with BM Trust, a firm registered to Bokaev's nephew. She also described money movements she said were made at Bokaev's request.

Why it matters: the case turns on who proposed whom and who checked what, the classic questions in a state-company spending trial. The testimony, if accepted, points to contracts steered from inside, not competed in the open.
