Kazakhstan's figure skater Mikhail Shaidorov has climbed to second in the world ISU rankings with 4,193 points, the highest position of his career. American Ilia Malinin leads with 4,590 points, and Japan's Yuma Kagiyama is third with 4,123.
Why it matters: Kazakhstan has rarely had a skater this close to the top of the world rankings, and Shaidorov's rise puts a Central Asian name in a sport long dominated by a handful of powers.
