The United States has sanctioned an Istanbul-based aviation firm, Fugo Ground Services, for providing ground services to six Iranian airlines that Washington has already blacklisted.
The Treasury Department said Fugo, registered in Istanbul's Besiktas district, began serving several of the carriers in the weeks after they were designated on September 8. The action is part of what Treasury calls Operation Economic Outcast, its campaign to cut Iran off from the global economy.
Why it matters: the designation puts Turkish aviation services squarely inside the US-Iran economic war, and warns any firm doing business with sanctioned Iranian carriers that Washington is watching the tarmac, not just the oil trade.
