ANALYSIS: After the midterms, Trump owns the Iran war alone

The war with Iran, now in its eighth month, has become the defining issue of Donald Trump's second term at home. Democrats took both chambers of Congress in the midterms, Vice President JD Vance blamed the war for the defeat, and on Wednesday Trump himself said it was largely true that the war cost Republicans the election because it pushed gasoline prices up.

That sequence matters because it changes who bears the cost of the war. Until now it was a foreign policy choice debated in Washington. Now it is a domestic political liability, and every development, from the Pentagon to the oil market, will be read through that lens.

Three pressures are converging on Trump at once. First, Congress: a Democratic majority can now use war powers votes, hearings and funding leverage to constrain the campaign, even without the votes to end it outright. Second, the Pentagon: reports that Trump is considering dismissing Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth show the midterm verdict reaching into the chain of command. Third, the economy: Brent crude fell to about 94 dollars late on Wednesday while gold jumped past 4,000 dollars, a market verdict that talks are possible but safety is still prized.

Tehran reads the same signals. A president who admits a war cost his party an election is a president under pressure to show a result, either a deal or an escalation he can defend. Meanwhile Washington is widening the economic squeeze, as the Fugo Ground Services designation in Istanbul shows: firms in third countries that service sanctioned Iranian carriers are now targets too.

For Türkiye, that last point is the sharpest. Ankara wants the war to end, but it also wants trade and aviation ties to survive, and designations like Fugo put Turkish firms in the crossfire of American enforcement.

What to watch: any decision on Hegseth, the first Democratic-led war powers moves in Congress, whether Brent holds below 100 dollars or rebounds, and whether Fugo-style designations spread to other firms doing business with Iran. If oil keeps falling and gold keeps rising, markets are betting on talks. If either reverses sharply, the bet is off.
