Finance Brief: Oil crashes, gold jumps, and the lira crosses 50

Oil fell hard and gold jumped on Wednesday as markets reacted to the US election result and to hopes of a deal over Iran. For Turkish savers and businesses, that mix matters because it moves fuel costs, the lira and the price of safety all at once.

Brent crude traded near 94 dollars late on November 4, down about 9 percent on the day, after settling at 103.60 dollars on November 3 and falling below 100 dollars during the day. Gold moved the other way, reaching about 4,064 dollars late on November 4, up about 3.6 percent on the day, as investors sought safety after the American vote.

In Türkiye, the BIST 100 stood at 11,023.55 on November 4, up 61.88 points, while the dollar traded at 50.0224 lira, having crossed 50 lira for the first time. The combination, cheaper oil but a weaker lira, cuts both ways for Turkish households: fuel import costs ease in dollars, but the lira price of everything imported stays under pressure.

Two things to watch from here. First, whether Brent holds below 100 dollars: if it does, it supports the case for lower fuel prices and calmer inflation expectations in Türkiye. If talks fail and Brent rebounds, that relief fades fast. Second, whether gold holds above 4,000 dollars: a sustained stay there says investors still expect trouble, whatever the headlines say about talks.

One more watch item for Turkish firms: Washington's designation of Istanbul-based Fugo Ground Services for servicing sanctioned Iranian airlines shows US sanctions enforcement reaching into Turkish aviation services. Any company with Iran-linked business should check its exposure now, not after a designation.
